RogueSocks. Great Name - Where’d It Come From?
In early 2009, while hiking off-trail in southern Nevada, I discovered the remains of a large, previously unreported petrified forest. It was amazing and beautiful!
I returned the next day so I could photograph the find, and noticed lots of fresh mule deer tracks and other telltales in the silty power that covers the Mojave Desert. Then, along with the deer tracks, I saw HUGE paw prints from what was clearly an adult mountain lion. I couldn’t resist – I followed the tracks for about a mile to a wide seasonal wash that was full from recent rain. Across the water and hidden by some upstream brush and boulders was a large animal at the waterline. There was no way to view it without getting into the water, so I stripped off my hiking boots and socks, dropped everything except my camera, then quietly crept up the icy wash to get a vantage.
Unfortunately, no cougar. Just a mule deer getting a drink. When I got back to my gear everything was there - camera backpack, boots, water packs…everything except my socks. Fresh critter tracks were all around the gear and drag marks lead to a hole under nearby scrub brush. Some lucky Antelope Squirrel is keeping toasty at night swaddled in my Merino wool.
The payoff? Well, the hike back was a little tough on the toes, but I ended up with a cool story and a GREAT name for my website. Kinda perfect for a photographer who will do nearly anything to get the perfect shot, right?
